Found this on cottage for sale near Bristol Harbor on Hooked on Houses…take a peek inside!
Not only is this Victorian cottage adorable, but it’s one of the “Herreshoff Houses” in Bristol, Rhode Island, built for the famous yacht-builder’s workers in the 1880s.
Herreshoff Manufacturing Company is known for revolutionizing yacht design and producing a succession of undefeated America’s Cup defenders between 1893-1920.
The current homeowner told the Providence Journal that her father was a marine engineer who worked for Herreshoff during the Depression and was assigned to a boat being built for one of the Vanderbilts.
He lived in one of the Herreshoff cottages at the time — probably this one or its “twin” version next door, which also housed employees.
The listing says: “Captain ‘Nat’ Herreshoff, known as the Wizard of Bristol, is widely known as the most influential nautical designer of our time.” His yachts were notable for their beauty, durability, and comfort.
“Such is true for the houses they designed and built for their staff. Herreshoff houses, albeit only a handful in existence, simply stand out among the many beautiful and historic homes in downtown Bristol.”
The cottage has 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and 1,443 square feet.
Bristol is known for having the oldest 4th of July parade in the country and draws crowds of around 200,000 each year.
I think this house has so much potential, you guys. How fun would it be to decorate it??
